Why Choose Synergy Treatment

If you or someone you love is seeking relief from the pain of alcohol and drug addiction, we can help.

Addiction is as misunderstood by the person struggling with addiction as those trying to help. It is neither a lack of will power nor moral weakness that causes someone to become addicted to drugs and alcohol. It was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1956 as meeting the five criteria of a disease: symptomatic, progressive, chronic, subject to relapse and ultimately, treatable.

To complicate matters, the disease of addiction is a 3-part malady that affects body, mind and spirit. Centered in the mind, an addicted person is unable to “out-think” the cravings and urges generated by the addicted brain. Studies show an actual change in brain chemistry as a result of chronic exposure to drugs and alcohol. When these substances are removed, the brain sends signals for “more, more, more” in order to relieve the distress. This phenomenon is known as “cravings” and all alcoholics or drug users experience this when they try to quit. Cravings can be so powerful an individual is unable to override them with will power or good judgment – anything to get the “fix”. Through abstinence, cravings diminish and the brain function begins to heal and return to “normal”. Alcohol and drug addiction is complicated by many factors. These can include genetics, family dynamics, social conditioning, and peer influence. Certain patterns of behavior are established around alcohol and drug use, including familiar places and people that can “trigger” cravings. Meeting up with the same friends every day at the same time sets up a pattern for drinking or using. The brain automatically associates routine surroundings with drinking or using, and even after a period of sobriety cravings can lead to relapse.

Because of the danger associated with familiar surroundings, location should be considered when choosing a treatment center. The first few weeks of treatment are the most difficult as the body goes through withdrawal and begins the initial healing process. This is when cravings are the most intense and commitment is low. It is human nature to resist change, even if it’s positive. Most of us become quite comfortable in what we consider to be our “normal” routine, no matter how destructive it appears to be to others. Changing anything requires effort and consistent practice until a new habit is formed. In order to let go of the old, space needs to be made for the new. This includes clearing out old associates and associations with drugs and alcohol use that may trigger a relapse and a return to addiction. An treatment center that is away from an individual’s addictive routine has a better chance at success. While 30 days is barely a start on a new way of life, it is still a solid beginning. Extended care has been shown to improve the chances of long-term success in maintaining a new way of life in sobriety.
